Kính thưa Các Vị Khách quý,
Anh chị em thân mến,

Giây phút này, giáo xứ Sở Kiện thuộc Tổng giáo phận Hà Nội đang là tâm điểm của Giáo Hội Việt Nam. Tất cả Hội đồng Giám mục Việt Nam có mặt ở đây. Các vị khách quý đến từ nhiều phương trời cũng đang hiện diện ở đây. Cả ngàn linh mục và tu sĩ nam nữ, hằng vạn tín hữu giáo dân, đại diện tất cả các giáo phận trong Giáo Hội Việt Nam đang có mặt ở đây. Và hằng triệu trái tim tín hữu Công giáo từ khắp mọi miền đất nước và từ hải ngoại cũng đang hướng lòng về đây. Vâng, trong giây phút này, giáo xứ Sở Kiện thực sự là tâm điểm của Giáo Hội Việt Nam. Quả thực, chưa bao giờ chúng ta lại được sống mầu nhiệm Giáo Hội, mầu nhiệm của Dân Thiên Chúa được qui tụ nên một ở đây, cách đặc biệt như thế. Vì vậy, trước hết, chúng ta hãy bắt tay nhau với lời chúc bình an và nụ cười thân thiện nhất để chào mừng Ngày Hồng Ân trọng đại này.

Thưa Anh Chị Em,

1. Từ khắp mọi miền đất nước, chúng ta quy tụ về đây để cử hành Lễ Khai Mạc Năm Thánh 2010. Thời điểm này mời gọi chúng ta nhìn lại hành trình lịch sử của Giáo Hội Chúa Kitô trên quê hương Việt Nam thân yêu: Từ những bước chân mạo hiểm của các vị thừa sai đầu tiên, Tin Mừng Chúa Kitô đã bắt đầu được loan báo trên mảnh đất quê hương chúng ta từ gần 500 năm về trước, để rồi nhờ ơn Chúa, Tin Mừng ấy mỗi ngày mỗi lan rộng cho đến cách đây 350 năm, hai giáo phận Tông toà đầu tiên đã được thiết lập tại Việt Nam. Rồi theo dòng lịch sử, Giáo Hội ngày càng phát triển cho đến năm 1960, vào ngày 24-11, Đức Chân Phước Giáo Hoàng Gioan XXIII đã ký Tông sắc thiết lập Hàng Giáo Phẩm Việt Nam, đánh dấu sự trưởng thành của Giáo Hội Chúa Kitô trên đất nước chúng ta.

Nhìn lại hành trình lịch sử ấy, chúng ta khám phá ra mầu nhiệm Giáo Hội, mầu nhiệm của hạt cải thật bé nhỏ (x. Lc 13,18-19) khi gieo xuống lòng đất, nhưng nhờ đâm rễ sâu trong đức tin nên đã không ngừng lớn lên trong hi vọng và trở thành cây to, phủ bóng mát tình yêu cho hằng triệu con người, trở thành một trong những Giáo hội có số tín hữu đông đảo nhất tại Á Châu. Mầu nhiệm ấy bắt nguồn từ Thiên Chúa, Đấng đã ban tặng cho ta món quà vô giá là Đức Giêsu Kitô, Con chí ái của Ngài, và đã dùng sức mạnh Thần Khí Ngài, thúc đẩy những bước chân thừa sai ra đi gieo vãi hạt giống Tin Mừng trên quê hương chúng ta. Vì thế, khi nhìn lại lịch sử Giáo Hội địa phương, chúng ta phải cất cao lời cảm tạ: “Hãy tạ ơn Chúa vì Chúa nhân từ, muôn ngàn đời Chúa vẫn trọn tình thương” (Tv 118,1).

2. Cùng với tâm tình tạ ơn Thiên Chúa, chúng ta hãy bày tỏ lòng tri ân sâu xa đối với các bậc tiền nhân, các ân nhân và các chứng nhân anh dũng của đức tin. Nếu hạt cải nhỏ bé có nẩy mầm và vươn dậy nhờ ánh nắng là ân sủng Thiên Chúa, thì hạt cải ấy cũng đồng thời được tưới bằng dòng nước trong lành là dòng máu của Các Thánh Tử Đạo, và những giọt mồ hôi hi sinh của các bậc tiền nhân và các ân nhân. Chính vì thế, theo lời đề nghị của Đức Tổng giám mục Hà Nội, HĐGMVN đã chấp thuận tổ chức Lễ Khai Mạc Năm Thánh tại giáo xứ Sở Kiện là nơi còn lưu giữ nhiều thánh tích của các Chứng nhân Tin Mừng. Và trước khi cử hành Lễ Khai Mạc chính thức hôm nay, thì tối hôm qua, chúng ta đã long trọng cử hành nghi thức tôn vinh Các Thánh Tử Đạo Việt Nam. Đồng thời, cũng để bày tỏ niềm tri ân đối với các ân nhân, chúng tôi đã mời các vị hồng y, giám mục – đại diện các Giáo hội đã và đang góp phần xây dựng và phát triển Giáo hội tại Việt Nam – đến tham dự Thánh Lễ khai mạc này.

3. Khi bày tỏ niềm tri ân sâu xa đối với các bậc tiền nhân, chúng ta ý thức rằng đức tin thực sự là hồng ân vô giá mà Thiên Chúa thương ban cho chúng ta qua người Con Một Chí Ái và được vun trồng bằng máu của Các Thánh Tử Đạo. Vì thế, chúng ta phải trân trọng hồng ân đức tin ấy và cùng nhau xây dựng Giáo Hội của Chúa ngày càng phát triển như lòng Chúa mong muốn.

Chúa muốn chúng ta xây dựng Giáo Hội như gia đình của Chúa, trong đó mọi người hoà thuận, hiệp nhất, yêu thương nhau như anh chị em một nhà. Hơn bao giờ hết, khung cảnh Lễ Khai Mạc hôm nay nói lên ý nghĩa đó. Chúng ta đến đây từ khắp các tỉnh thành, từ 26 giáo phận, thuộc mọi thành phần dân Chúa, làm nên một cộng đoàn đông đảo nhưng hợp nhất. Dù đông đảo, tất cả chúng ta cùng ăn một Bánh và cùng uống một Chén, cho nên chúng ta chỉ là một Thân Mình, hiệp thông gắn bó với nhau nhờ được hiệp thông với Chúa Kitô (x. 1Cr 10,17). Sự hiệp thông này cần được thể hiện cụ thể trong đời sống hằng ngày theo gương mẫu của cộng đoàn tín hữu thời sơ khai: một lòng một ý, hợp nhất với nhau, chuyên cần đào sâu giáo lý đức tin, tham dự Thánh lễ và cầu nguyện, chia sẻ mọi sự cho nhau (x. Cv 2,42-46; 4,32). Cha ông chúng ta đã cố gắng sống điều đó. Cử hành lễ Khai Mạc Năm Thánh tại Tổng giáo phận Hà Nội nhắc chúng ta nhớ đến cộng đoàn tín hữu đầu tiên trên đất Thăng Long. Các tín hữu thời ấy đã yêu thương gắn bó với nhau đến nỗi người ngoài gọi họ là những người theo “Đạo của Tình yêu”.

Như thế, cử hành Năm Thánh 2010 mời gọi và thúc đẩy tất cả chúng ta cùng nhau xây dựng một Giáo Hội hiệp thông; một Giáo Hội trong đó mỗi người đồng cảm với Giáo Hội, vui niềm vui của Giáo Hội và đau nỗi đau của Giáo Hội; một Giáo Hội trong đó mỗi người cảm nhận mình được yêu thương chăm sóc, đồng thời có trách nhiệm chăm lo cho người khác cũng như cho ích chung của Giáo Hội. Đó chính là cách thể hiện tư cách người môn đệ chân chính của Chúa như Người đã truyền dạy: “Hãy yêu thương nhau như Thầy đã yêu thương anh em” (Ga 15,12) và “Cứ dấu này người ta nhận biết anh em là môn đệ của Thầy, là anh em yêu thương nhau” (Ga 13,35).

4. Ngoài ra, hồng ân đức tin Chúa đã ban cho chúng ta cũng cần được chia sẻ cho người khác, nhất là cho đồng bào của mình, những người cùng sống trong một đất nước, cùng chia sẻ một lịch sử, cùng chung một vận mệnh quê hương. Thật vậy, càng ý thức hồng ân cao cả của đức tin và càng yêu thương đồng bào đồng loại của mình, chúng ta lại càng được thúc đẩy loan báo Chúa Giêsu và Tin Mừng của Người cho họ, đồng thời cố gắng đem những giá trị Tin Mừng thấm nhập vào mọi thực tại của đời sống hằng ngày. Đó chính là mệnh lệnh Chúa trao cho chúng ta: “Anh em là muối cho đời, là ánh sáng cho trần gian” (Mt 5,13.14)

Phương thế tốt nhất để thi hành sứ mạng đó là xây dựng đời sống trên nền tảng Phúc Âm. Cách cụ thể, kể từ Năm Thánh này, theo lời nhắn nhủ của Đức Thánh Cha Bênêđictô XVI, mỗi gia đình công giáo hãy trở thành một trường dạy đức tin và đức mến, cũng như các giá trị và đức tính nhân bản. Mỗi người công giáo hãy cố gắng sống theo lương tâm ngay thẳng, bác ái, trung thực và quý trọng công ích. Như thế, chúng ta góp phần xây dựng một xã hội công bằng, liên đới và bình đẳng, là xã hội mà mọi người mong ước, đồng thời làm chứng cho mọi người về vẻ đẹp và những giá trị tích cực của Đạo Chúa.

Thưa Anh Chị Em,

Giáo Hội Chúa Kitô trên trần gian là Giáo Hội lữ hành, nghĩa là một cộng đoàn còn đang trên đường đi, chưa đạt tới đích điểm là Nước Trời. Vì thế, chúng ta không tránh khỏi những lỗi lầm và thiếu sót của cá nhân cũng như cộng đoàn. Chúng ta khiêm tốn nhìn nhận những lỗi lầm thiếu sót đó, chân thành xin Chúa và mọi người tha thứ, để với tâm hồn thanh thản, chúng ta mạnh mẽ tiến lên trên con đường loan báo Chúa Giêsu và Tin Mừng của Người cho anh chị em đồng bào của mình.

Trong niềm tri ân cảm tạ cùng với quyết tâm xây dựng Giáo Hội như lòng Chúa mong muốn và tin tưởng bước tới tương lai, nhân danh HĐGMVN, tôi long trọng và vui mừng tuyên bố khai mẠc NĂM THÁNH 2010 CỦA GIÁO HỘI CÔNG GIÁO TẠI VIỆT NAM.

Chers Hôtes Distingués de notre Eglise,
Chers Frères et Sœurs,

En ce moment historique, la paroisse de Sở Kiện de l’Archidiocèse d’Hanoi est vraiment devenue le cœur de l’Eglise au Vietnam. La Conférence Episcopale du Vietnam toute entière est en effet ici présente. Nos Hôtes distingués venant de différents horizons sont aussi présents. Des centaines de Prêtres, de Religieux et Religieuses, des milliers de Fidèles laïques représentant tous les diocèses du pays sont là. Et des millions de fidèles catholiques présents dans toutes les régions du pays et à l’étranger tournent également leurs cœurs vers ce lieu. Oui, en ce moment historique, la Paroisse de Sở Kiện est assurément le cœur de notre Eglise. Jamais auparavant nous n’avons eu la grâce de vivre le mystère ecclésial de cette manière spéciale en ce lieu, c’est-à-dire de vivre le mystère du Peuple de Dieu unifié et rassemblé. Il convient donc tout d’abord de nous serrer la main en échangeant le souhait de paix ainsi que des sourires amicaux pour saluer ce grand Jour de grâce.

Chers Frères et Soeurs,

1. De partout nous nous sommes rassemblés ici pour célébrer l’Ouverture de l’Année Jubilaire 2010. Ce “Kairos” nous invite à jeter un regard sur l’itinéraire historique parcouru par l’Eglise du Christ dans notre chère patrie : c’est lorsque les premiers Missionnaires entamèrent leurs pas aventureux sur le sol vietnamien il y a à peu près cinq cents ans, que la Bonne Nouvelle du Christ fut proclamée pour la première fois sur notre terre natale, et qu’elle se propagea de jour en jour grâce à Dieu jusqu’en 1659, où, il y a exactement 350 ans, deux premiers Vicariats Apostoliques furent créés au Vietnam. Puis, s’appuyant toujours sur le cours de l’histoire, l’Eglise se développa de plus en plus jusqu’au 24 novembre 1960, date où le Bienheureux Pape Jean XXIII établit la Hiérarchie Catholique au Viêtnam par une Constitution Apostolique. Il marquait ainsi la maturité de l’Eglise du Christ dans notre pays.

C’est par un tel regard embrassant notre itinéraire historique que nous découvrons combien le mystère de l’Eglise est contenu en germe dans le tout petit grain de sénevé (cf. Lc 13,18-19) : jeté en terre, il enfonce profondément ses racines dans l’humus de la foi, il ne cesse de croître dans l’espérance pour devenir un grand arbre. Il couvre de son ombre d’amour d’une fraicheur inouïe des millions d’êtres humains et devient ainsi l’une des Eglises les plus peuplées d’Asie. Ce mystère s’origine en Dieu Lui-même, qui nous a donné son Fils bien-aimé, Jésus-Christ, comme étant le Bien inestimable, et qui nous a envoyé son Esprit tout-puissant pour guider les pas des Missionnaires en les incitant à semer la Bonne Nouvelle dans notre terre natale. Ce rappel du passé historique de notre Eglise locale nous invite à entonner à haute voix le chant du psalmiste : “Rendez grâce à Dieu, car il est bon, car éternel est son amour” (Ps 118,1).

2. Parallèlement aux actions de grâces envers le Seigneur, nous voulons témoigner notre gratitude à l’égard de nos Ancêtres, de nos Bienfaiteurs et des Témoins héroïques de la Foi. Si le petit grain de sénevé bourgeonne et se lève sous les rayons de la grâce divine, il est en même temps arrosé du sang des Martyrs, tel un jet d’eau pure et féconde. Il est aussi arrosé des gouttes de sueur de nos Ancêtres et de nos Bienfaiteurs comme preuve de leurs sacrifices. C’est pour cette raison, que, d’une part, sur proposition de Monseigneur l’Archevêque d’Hanoi, la Conférence Episcopale du Vietnam a consenti au choix de ce lieu pour organiser la Fête d’Ouverture de l’Année Jubilaire, car c’est ici, à la Paroisse de Sở Kiện que l’on conserve de nombreuses reliques des Saints Martyrs du Vietnam. C’est d’autre part pour exprimer notre gratitude envers nos Bienfaiteurs que nous avons invité à cette fête les Cardinaux et les Evêques représentant tous les pays qui ont contribué et contribuent encore à l’édification et au développement de notre Eglise.

3. C’est en exprimant notre profonde reconnaissance envers nos Ancêtres que nous prenons conscience du don inestimable de la Foi que Dieu nous a accordée par amour et dans Son Fils Unique bien-aimé et que le sang des Saints Martyrs a fait croître. Il s’ensuit que nous devons tenir en haute estime ce don de la Foi et construire ensemble l’Eglise en vue d’un développement selon le cœur de Dieu.

Le Seigneur veut en effet que nous fassions de l’Eglise une famille de Dieu, dont les membres s’aiment et vivent en paix et dans l’unité comme frères et sœurs. Le cadre de cette Fête d’Ouverture de l’Année Jubilaire exprime plus que jamais ce sens ecclésial. Venant des vingt-six diocèses répartis dans toutes les provinces et les villes du pays, et représentant tous les états de vie dans le Peuple de Dieu, nous formons une communauté nombreuse et unie. Nous sommes nombreux à communier au même Pain et au même Calice Eucharistiques, et nous formons tous un seul Corps, unis entre nous et unis au Christ (cf. 1Cor 10,17). Cette commUNI0N Eucharistique doit s’exprimer concrètement dans la vie quotidienne sur le modèle de l’Eglise primitive dans laquelle la multitude de ceux qui étaient devenus croyants n’avait qu’un cœur et qu’une âme ; et ils étaient tous assidus à l’approfondissement de la doctrine de la Foi, à la fraction du pain et aux prières ; et ils partageaient toutes choses ensemble (cf Ac 2,42-46; 4,32). C’est ce que nos Ancêtres ont vécu de toute leur force. Cette célébration qui a lieu dans l’Archidiocèse d’Hanoi, rappelle à notre mémoire la première communauté chrétienne de Thang Long, où les croyants vivaient dans une telle unité et une telle charité que leurs concitoyens non-chrétiens les appelaient “les adeptes de la Religion de ceux qui s’aiment”.

La célébration de l’Année Jubilaire nous invite et nous incite en même temps à construire ensemble une Eglise de commUNI0N : une Eglise dans laquelle chaque membre est prêt à “sentir avec l’Eglise” (sentire cum Ecclesia) en accueillant les joies et les souffrances de son Eglise comme siennes ; une Eglise dans laquelle chaque membre se sent tout autant aimé et pris en charge qu’il se sent lui-même responsable des autres et de l’intérêt commun de l’Eglise tout entière. C’est de cette manière qu’il concrétise sa condition de disciple authentique du Seigneur qui a dit : “Aimez-vous les uns les autres comme je vous ai aimés” (Jn 15,12) et “à ceci tous vous reconnaitront pour mes disciples : à l’amour que vous aurez les uns pour les autres” (Jn 13,35).

4. D’autre part, le don de la Foi que le Seigneur nous a accordé, doit être aussi partagé aux autres, particulièrement à nos concitoyens qui vivent avec nous dans le même pays, partagent avec nous la même histoire et la même destinée liée à la terre natale. Pour autant que nous ayons conscience du grand don de la Foi et que nous aimions sincèrement nos concitoyens, nous nous sentons poussés à leur annoncer Jésus-Christ et son Evangile, à imprégner la réalité de notre vie quotidienne des valeurs évangéliques, selon le commandement du Seigneur Lui-même : “Vous êtes le sel de la terre …, vous êtes la lumière du monde” (Mt 5,13-14).

Le meilleur moyen qui nous aide à accomplir cette mission consiste à construire notre vie sur le fondement évangélique. Pour parler concrètement, et selon l’exhortation de Sa Sainteté le Pape Benoit XVI, que chaque famille catholique devienne à partir de cette Année Jubilaire tout autant une école de foi et d’amour qu’un foyer de valeurs et de vertus humaines. Que chaque fidèle catholique s’efforce de mener une vie en accord avec une conscience droite, une vie basée sur la charité, l’honnêteté et l’amour du bien commun, contribuant ainsi à construire une société juste, solidaire et équitable, pour répondre à l’aspiration de tous et leur montrer la beauté et les valeurs positives de la Religion Chrétienne.

Chers Frères et Sœurs,

L’Eglise du Christ sur terre est une Eglise itinérante comme une communauté en route vers le Royaume des Cieux comme étant son but ultime mais pas encore atteint. C’est ce qui explique le fait que nous, catholiques, aussi bien individuellement que communautairement, nous n’avons pas réussi à éviter toutes les fautes et les omissions. Nous reconnaissons donc humblement ces fautes et ces omissions et nous en demandons sincèrement pardon à Dieu et à tous, afin de pouvoir avancer, avec un cœur serein et un esprit rempli de force, sur le chemin missionnaire qui nous mène jusqu’à nos concitoyens, nos frères et nos sœurs, pour leur annoncer Jésus-Christ et son Evangile.

Avec les sentiments de gratitude et le ferme propos de construire l’Eglise selon le cœur de Dieu, et avec le regard plein de confiance tourné vers l’avenir, au nom de la Conférence Episcopale du Vietnam, je déclare solennellement l’OUVERTURE DE L’ANNÉE JUBILAIRE 2010 DE L’ÉGLISE CATHOLIQUE AU VIETNAM.

AT THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE JUBILEE YEAR 2010

Dear Cardinals, Bishops
Your Excellencies,
Distinguished guests,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

At the moment, the parish of So Kien in the archdiocese of Hanoi is the heart of the Vietnamese Church. All members of the Vietnamese Catholic Bishops’ conference are gathered here. It is a great pleasure for me to welcome our distinguished guests from other countries. Thousands of priests and religious brothers and sisters, as well as tens of thousands of representatives of the laity from 26 Vietnamese archdioceses and dioceses are present here. Millions of domestic and overseas lay people turn their hearts to here. Yes, at this moment, the parish of So Kien is actually the heart of our Vietnamese Church. Indeed, we are living the mystery of the Church, the mystery of uniting the people of God into one in this place and in a special way that we never have before. Therefore, let us first exchange handshakes with greetings of peace and friendly smiles to welcome this great day of opening the Jubilee Year.

My brothers and sisters,

1. We are gathered here from the different areas of this country to celebrate the Opening Ceremony Jubilee 2010. This moment encourages us to look back on the history of the Catholic Church in Vietnam: In the fifteenth century, through the footsteps of the early venturesome missionaries, the Good News of Jesus Christ was proclaimed in our lovely land. After that, this Good News has become widespread by God’s grace. As the result, 350 ago, the first two apostolic vicariates of Tonkin (Dang Ngoai) and Cochinchine (Dang Trong) were established by Pope Alexander VII in 1659. The constant increase of followers as well as a wide development of evangelization led to the creation of the hierarchy of the Church in Vietnam by pope John XXIII on November 24, 1960. That event marked the maturing of the Vietnamese Catholic Church.

Looking back on this historical journey, we discover the mystery of the Church – the mystery of the mustard seed ( cf Luke 13:18-19). When the seed of Good News was planted in this country, it became deeply rooted in faith and has therefore grown into hope and become the tree that is large enough to give the shade of love for millions of people. Vietnam now has the second highest percentage of Catholic per capita in Asia. This mystery originated from God who gave us this precious gift – his only Son, Jesus Christ – and gave the missionaries the strenght they needed, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to preach the Good News in our country. Therefore, when we look back at our local Church history, we must lift high our voices to gratefully sing : “Give thanks to the LORD, who is good, whose love endures forever” (Ps 118: 1).

2. Together with giving thanks to God, we must express our deep gratitude to our ancestors, benefactors, and courageous witnesses of faith. If the small mustard seed sprouts up and grows by the light, which is God’s grace, then it is also nurtured by the fresh water which is the blood of martyrs, and the sweat of the brows of our ancestors and benefactors. For this reason, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Vietnam has approved the suggestion of the Most Reverend Joseph Ngo Quang Kiet, Archbishop of Hanoi, for the opening ceremony of the Jubilee Year to be held in So Kien parish, where so many relics of martyrs are kept. Last night, before celebrating this opening ceremony of the Jubilee, we conducted a solemn rite to show our great reverence to the Vietnamese martyrs. And to show our gratitude towards the benefactors, we invited the cardinals and the bishops – who represent the Churches, which have helped and continue to help us to build and develop the local Church – to join with us in this inaugural Mass today.

3. When we express our deep gratitude to our ancestors, we are aware that faith is a truly precious grace that God gives us by His only Son and is nurtured by the blood of the matyrs. As a result, we must respect this grace of faith and together build up the Church, day by day, to develop as God wants.

God desires that we build up the Church as God’s family. This opening ceremony of the Jubilee today shows that we want to be a community as brothers and sisters in one family in love. We who come here from different cities, from 26 dioceses, belonging to different vocations, together are many people, but we are united in one heart. Although we are many, we all share the one Bread, one Cup; ans so we are one Body in Christ that unites all of us together as one family. We are in commUNI0N with one another because each person is in commUNI0N with Jesus Christ (cf 1Cr 10:17). This bond of community needs to become part of our daily lives, following the example of the early Christian community : one body, one heart, united together, deeply rooted in our faith through diligent study of the Word, attending Mass and praying together, and sharing everything with one another (Acts 2:42-46; 4:32). Our ancestor tried to live like that. Celebrating the opening ceremony of the Jubilee Year in the archdiocese of Ha noi reminds us to remember the early Vietnamese Christian community in Thang Long. The way they lived shows how they loved one another and to such an extent that they were called the followers of “the Way of Love”.

Thus, the celebration of the Jubilee Year 2010 invites and impels all of us to build together the commUNI0N of the Church in which each individual identifies with the Church, rejoicing with the joy of the Church, suffering with the pain of the Church. It is a Church in which each member feels beloved and at the same time ready to love one another, and responsible for the welfare of the Church. This is the style of life of the true disciples of Jesus as he said : “This is my commandment : love one another as I love you” (cf. John 15: 12), and “This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (cf. John 13:35).

Moreover, the precious grace of faith that God has given us should also be shared with others, especially the Vietnamese people who live together in this country, sharing a history and the fate of this nation. Indeed, the more we are aware of this amazing faith, the more we love our people. This encourages us to ongoing evangelization, and making the Gospel’s value permeate all situations of daily life. It is Jesus Christ’s decree : “You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the World” (cf. Mt 5: 13-14).

The best process for achieving this mission is building our lives on the basis of Scripture. In particular, in this Jubilee Year 2010, according to the words of Pope Benedict XVI, each Catholic family should become the school of faith and love, as well as of human values and virtues. Each Catholic person ought to live according to a right conscience, charity, honesty, and respect for the common good. Thus, we participate in building a society based on values of solidarity, equality and justice. This is a society that the people eagerly long for. At the same time, we also witness to all people about the beauty and value of the Catholic religion.

My brothers and sisters,

The Church of Jesus-Christ is a pilgrim Church – a community that is on the journey and has not yet arrived at the goal of Heaven. Therefore, we who – in private and community – have made mistakes and failed to do things we should. Apologize for these faults, and ask God, as well as our brothers and sisters to forgive us. Thus, with peaceful hearts we resolutely go forward to announce Jesus and His Good News for our Vietnamese brothers and sisters.

With deepest thanks to God and determination to continue to build the Vietnamese Church as God wants, and hope about the future, on behalf of the Vietnamese Catholic Bishops’Conference, I solemnly and joyfuly announce the opening of the Jubilee Year 2010 of the Vietnamese Catholic Church.
